With parents working longer hours than ever before, kids being pushed to do as many extra school activities as they can, and every family member sitting in front of a different computer or TV screen in the evenings, quality family time can seem impossible to get.

With this in mind, a growing number of families are taking a radical solution: selling up the house, quitting their jobs, taking the kids off school and embarking on a year long adventure.

Filmed over a whole year, Family Gap Year will capture the emotional struggles of this extraordinary chapter in the families’ lives. Above all it will get at the psychological truth behind these adventures – more often than not it’s the problems you are running away from that you take with you.

We’ll document the whole journey, from preparations at home to the eventual return. Will the trip bring the family closer than ever before or put strain on couples used to spending time apart? How will they cope in the middle of the jungle in Tanzania or when faced with scary policemen in Colombia? Will they give it all up half way through because of a sudden bout of malaria or a broken leg, or face whatever comes their way? And what will happen once the trip is over and they must return to their old routine in the UK?
